What is Division?

Splitting into equal parts

Division is one of the four basic arithmetic operations. When you divide, you find how many times one number fits into another. The result is the quotient. Sometimes there is a remainder—the amount left over when the divisor does not divide evenly. For example, 17 ÷ 5 = 3 remainder 2.

÷

Exact Division

When the dividend is evenly divisible by the divisor, the quotient is a whole number with no remainder.

Division with Remainder

When division is not exact, we express the remainder as "q r r"—e.g., 17 ÷ 5 = 3 r 2. Use our remainder mode to practice.

Division Rules

Key steps for dividing whole numbers

Long Division

Divide digit by digit from left to right. Subtract, bring down, repeat until you reach the ones place or a remainder.

48 ÷ 4 = 12
126 ÷ 6 = 21

Remainder

The remainder is what is left when the divisor does not divide evenly. It is always less than the divisor.

17 ÷ 5 = 3 r 2
23 ÷ 4 = 5 r 3

17 ÷ 53 r 2

Why Division Matters

Division helps you split quantities fairly, find rates, and solve proportion problems. Remainders appear in real-world situations like sharing items.

Applications

Used in sharing, rates, ratios, averages, and any situation where you split a quantity into equal parts.
